The Cafe Terrace, Van Gogh, September 1888 Place du Forum, Arles, at night Vincent Willem van Gogh (30 March 1853 – 29 July 1890) was a Dutch Post-Impressionist artist. Some of his paintings are now among the world's best known, most popular and expensive works of art. Still today, visitors to the Place du Forum in Arles can stand at the north eastern corner where the artist set up his easel. He looked south toward the artificially lighted terrace of the popular coffee house as well as into the darkness of the street leading up to the building structure far back comprising the town house (to the left, not pictured) and, beyond this structure, the tower of a former church (now a museum). On the right, Van Gogh indicated a lighted shop as well, and some branches of the trees surrounding the place.
